For clarity Brighton Cougars Basketball Club and B-right-on are not and have never been affiliated with each other.

If you are a player or parent who has any questions or needs clarification regarding this matter please contact Cougars.

First game fun for u18's

As the Brighton Cougars U18 Men’s season got underway; it was obvious the guys were enjoying themselves. Training sessions were well-attended and energetic. Leaders began to show themselves. They were enthusiastic about playing man-to-man defence with a bit of anattitude. And on Saturday, all of thatcame together with an emphatic EBL South 1 Conference road win at Bracknell Cobras. The Cougars’ jumped out to an early 19-2 lead and continued that pace to 99-49 victory.

DominicEvans led all scorers with 33 points while Chris Currell and Anar Brewin added14 apiece.

“I was happy with our early effort, especially at the defensive end, and it’salways good to have everyone score in a game,” commented Coach MikeBlatchford. “We did get a little sloppy at times but it’s early in the season and we will keep getting better,” headded.

The Cougars started every period with a strong run, pushing out margins of12-2, 13-3 and 11-2 in the second, third and final periods, respectively. The Cougars led 52-13 at half time and shot 8of 13 from the free throw line.

“Our defence really set the tone from the start,” according to the coach, “Andas we were putting a stop to the Bracknell attack, we were able to get out and run to some easy scores.”

The Cougars will be facing much tougher opposition in future as Bracknell occupied the bottom of the table last season and will likely do so again thisyear. Regardless, starting the season with a win on the road is never easy and the Cougars have shown their conference opponents they are not to be taken lightly.

The Cougars host Guildford Heat on Saturday, 8 October at 2:15 at Dorothy Stringer.

The guys are looking forward to the support of their fellow Cougars in what promises to be a tough game.

Under 12s get off to winning start

Worthing D&D took an early lead as new players recruited into the Under 12s had their first taste of competitive action.

The visitors exploited early defensive confusion in both the first and second 5-minute periods in the first half and threatened to surge ahead. But a quick timeout helped strengthen the team's attack and defense to focus on the gameplan.

In the third 10-miute period of the first half the Cougars dominated and started taking points and controlled the boards taking all rebounds. They soon drew level and took charge of the game.

Point guard Noah Tappenden, the Cougars' top scorer with 24 points, clocked up 12 points in this period with forward Tom Williams bagging 8. In the first 5 minute period of the second half Williams added a further 8 taing his game total to 16.

Sammi Charles-Ellery clocked up a total of 14 thoughout the game, sinking four baskets in the final 10 minute period of the game.

Worthing threatened a comeback in the final quarter but the Cougars slowed the game right down and walked off winners 63-39.

"I am proud of the boys as we had new players in the team following the loss of two key players to Worthing Thunder," said Coach Simon Ellery. "But the character and the 'never say die' spirit of this team clearly lives on."

"I'm looking forward to a strong season and I expect every single player to show huge improvements by working hard in training."

Tip-off at 10.30 for Under 12s vs Lancing

Because of an exciting three game line-up this Saturday at Dorothy Stringer the Under 12s should aim to arrive at 10.00 for a 10.30 tip-off. We want to be on court warming up at 10.15.

Sorry for any inconvenience and let team manager Bruce know if you have any problem with this or will be late by email bruce@firenet.ws

Brighton Cougars Under 12s second win

The Under 12s started strongly and racked up a high score against a young and understrength Lancing.

The home team were consistent with layups and demonstrated an increasingly strong passing game.

Lancing fielded a team of nine so the pressure was on their point guard who controlled their attacks and sunk an impressive field goal.

For the second game in a row the Cougars clocked up 4 fouls which meant lancing could go to the foul line for open shots.

Tougher challenges lie ahead but the Cougar's offensive play is strong and the passing game is improving.

Under 12s overcome Angmering Cobras

The Cobras were strong on height and won the tip-off as the teams shared points up until the end of the first half.

The home team had players who could score from difficult angles and were finishing layups comfortably.

But the physical confrontations started taking their toll on both teams as the Cobras players picked up fouls.

The Cougars played to their strengths and moved the ball around the thrree point line and penetrated the open lanes.

Despite the opponents having the height advantage, Tom Williiams, who racked up his highest score of the season , dominated the rebonds with Kiaren as Noah Tappenden clocked up another healthy individual score.

The Cougars, who steadily dominated the game in the last quarter as the Cobras left holes in defence as they tried to get back into the game, walked off the court winners 36-56.

Cougars Under 12s snatch victory from jaws of defeat against Hawks

The Hawks took an early lead and retained it right up to the fourth quarter against a Cougars side missing key players - Saturday 19 November.

See pictures here: http://on.fb.me/shVXDe

Stronger passing and movement in the second quarter saw the home team begin to open up a gap.

Four team fouls also meant that the visitors had to stand by and watch the Hawks shoot from the line and score several points.

The Cougars left it to the fourth quarter before they stepped up the game and began sinking points with a three-pointer and several crucial laypups to win 55-63

Under 12s repeat 'great escape' in 2nd win over Hawks in 7 days

The Under 12s set out to improve on passing and movement to rack up points and shut down the Hawks.

See more pics here: http://on.fb.me/tohYrd

But despite having home advantage the Brighton-team failed to impose themselves early on in the first three quarters.

In the second of two back to back games, the Horsham-team again started pulling away in the first and second quarter to open up a significant lead.

Both teams picked up fouls which sent the rivals to the freethrow line but while the Hawks sunk the points the Cougars missed.

In what was a repeat of the previous game, the Cougars were fired up in the fourth quarter and pulled away to win 50-44.

The Cougars missed an alarming number of free throws that could have decided the game.

What is Old School?

"Old-School" Basketball..... Ritz Ingram

We often hear people using the term "Old-School" when they see something happen on the Basketball Court. Did you ever stop and ask yourself what they are talking about?

Here is my definition of "Old-School" ....

"Old-School" refers to a Time when it was "all about the Game" and not about "your Game".

"Old-School" means what can I do to help my Team win the Game and not how can I win the Game.

"Old-School" means working to get the best Shot for the Team and not just about getting your shot off.

"Old-School" means passing the Ball to an open player and not just trying to make great passes.

"Old-School" means playing defense by moving your feet and not just reaching in and trying to steal the ball.

"Old-School" means preventing your man from getting the ball; not let him get it and then try to block his shot.

"Old-School" means if you can’t beat your man in two or three dribbles, then give the ball up; and not dribble until you beat your man.

"Old-School" means that "and-1" is a made-basket plus a free-throw and not a series of individual shake-and-bake moves from a video.

"Old-School" means move until you are open and then move again; not spot up for a "Three" and then wait there until you get the ball.

"Old-School" means if you lose the Ball on offense, then you hustle and try and get it back on defense; not stand and blame the ref or a teammate for the mistake.

"Old-School" means looking at the score sheet and feeling good that your team won and not feeling bad because you were not one of the top scorers.

"Old-School" means that making a good pass is just as important as making a shot.

"Old-School" means that Boxing-Out is just as important as getting the Rebound.

"Old-School" refers to a time when Practice meant trying to improve all of your basketball skills; not just going to the Gym to shoot 3-Pointers or try to Dunk.

An opponent may stop an "Old-School" Player from scoring but they can’t prevent him from having a good game by only stopping his scoring, because "Old-School" Players can hurt you in many other ways... They Pass, they Rebound, they play Defense, they Lead their team by example, they understand that to win you have to do more than just score points....

"Old-School" means trying to be the best player you can be and then trying to help your team in every way possible to be the best that it can be....
