Chairman’s Statement 2016-17
We have had 13 Teams this season: two U11, two U12, three U14, three U16, two Women and one Mens team, plus an All Star session on Saturday morning which if you haven’t seen it can be very impressive with up to 40 players, most of whom are U10, learning and enjoying the game.
That’s the most teams we have had since I’ve been part of the club. Every week we’ve made it possible for well over 200 young men and women to play basketball. Which is a great achievement and a credit to all of us as a club and especially all those who help in any way either as a Team Manager or helping to raise funds or coaching or just making sure the players turn up for training or games.
We’ve played 188 games this season so far and won 108 of them.
Half these games naturally have been at home, and have needed referees and table officials arranging for them. This hasn’t happened on it own, so a massive thank you Mike Whiley and Karen Perrier…… who yet again have between them made sure that we have had refs and TOs at every game we have hosted… its been close a couple of times, but never have teams turned up to play with no officials present. Which has happened at some of our away games. This is incredibly impressive and so under appreciated, I know how much work and effort it takes, so thank you.
Helping Karen and Mike this year are a number of newly qualified TOs and referees from the club, so congratulation to them you know who they are and there will be more games next season for you to officiate at.
We have had more junior members helping this year than every before. Not just with officiating but also as assistant coaches with the U11s and All Stars.
Whilst I’m saying thank you’s the club wouldn’t run with out Debs who does more to keep the club in line and on track then any other member of the committee and works so hard dealing with enquires and new members and so much more…
Thanks also to Sean who has run all stars for the last 4 or 5 season as well as coaching an U11’s and a women’s team on top of this he provides lots of support in the background to the club as well.
This season we entered 10 leagues as a club: 4 National League and 6 in the Sussex local league and amazingly have won 5 of them. What an incredible achievement
At local league we had two teams who remain undefeated all season - U11 Gold and Women’s Green – and they both finished the season as League Champions. The U12 Blues also won their half of the league but lost out to Cagers in the final.
.At National League our U14 boys won their regional league and have gained promotion to the premiere division for next season. The highest level of junior basketball in the country.
Our U16 Girls National league team also won there their regional league and too have gained promotion to the premiere league.
The success of this group of U16s and the girls programme as a whole owes a huge debt of gratitude to Hugh Sandie. He has guided them for the past four seasons. It started when we entered Sussex's first all girls U11 team, and has now grown to two well-respected National League teams.
As well as taking his team to the National League playoff for the last two seasons Hugh has also coached two girls who have gone on to be part of the England squad. Alex Baker and Amelia Sandie
Next season he is handing over the reigns so I would like to take this opportunity to personal thank him for his contribution not just to the girls programme but also to the club with his generous donations to the raffle, and much more!
